Marine Floating Wetland Launched!

As of June 2022, the Green Futures Lab’s marine unit was installed at Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle, Washington. With volunteers from Earth Corps, the unit was loaded with substrate, planted, launched, and fastened to the dock. We are hopeful, this unit will provide vital habitat for our local juvenile salmon.

The floating wetland unit has a variety of plantings, some of which include Menzies’ Larkspur, Pickleweed, Dune Grass, and Eel Grass.

Since the installation, the plantings have continued to grow and establish their roots, we almost immediately saw fish start to use it, and have even attracted a happy heron! Over the summer, research was conducted to monitor plant growth and mortality, fish use, and water quality.

We are so excited to have this newest floating wetland launched and can’t wait to see it continue to grow and create habitat. All are more than welcome to come over to Shilshole Bay Marina to view the wetland in real life!

Thank you to all the volunteers and people that helped make this project happen!
